John M. Slack is a retired Member of the Firm. Mr. Slack attended public schools in Charleston, West Virginia, and graduated from Landon School, Bethesda, Maryland, in 1961. He obtained his Bachelor of Arts from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1965 and his Juris Doctor from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville in 1969. He began his practice with what was then Jackson, Kelly, Holt & O'Farrell in 1969 and retired from the active practice of law in 2001. Mr. Slack is Of Counsel to the Firm.
Mr. Slack's practice was primarily devoted to litigation, with focus on a variety of civil defense areas, including insurance bad faith; products liability; professional liability, both legal and medical; health care; nursing/retirement home liability; premises liability; various class action claims; employer's liability; industrial corporate liability; and various contract and property law‑related issues. He also had a domestic relations practice and served as a mediator. Mr. Slack tried numerous cases in state and federal courts, appeared and argued numerous cases before the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals and Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. He is admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court.
Mr. Slack served as a member of the West Virginia Bar Association, West Virginia State Bar Association, Kanawha County Bar Association, United States Arbitration and Mediation of Western Pennsylvania and West Virginia, Inc., and Defense Trial Counsel of West Virginia, Inc. He spoke on various topics and lectured at various bar‑related seminars. Mr. Slack served as Chairman, AAA West Virginia State Association; Board of Directors, AAA Cincinnati, Ohio; Chairman and Board of Directors, AAA Southern West Virginia Auto Club; Kanawha 20 AF&AM, Charleston, West Virginia; Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Charleston; Beni Kedem Temple A.A.O.N.M.S., Charleston, West Virginia; Royal Order of Jesters, Court 111, Charleston, West Virginia; and member, First Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Slack remains available to serve as a consultant/witness in the area of legal malpractice and as a mediator in areas of civil litigation.
