Robert G. Tweel is a Member of the Firm and Leader of the Tax Practice Group. His practice focuses on federal tax issues. He represents and works with accountants and attorneys in analyzing federal tax issues, including compliance with the standards of tax practice. He has represented numerous business enterprises, including corporations, limited liability companies, limited partnerships and partnerships, in regard to formation, operation, sale and dissolution. He has formed professional entities for accountants, physicians, lawyers and dentists and many other professions. In addition, he has formed several charitable organizations and healthcare entities, and he has represented many tax‑exempt entities on a variety of transactional issues.
Mr. Tweel is a member of the Taxation Section of the American Bar Association. He has been admitted to the West Virginia Bar, the Tennessee Bar and the United States District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia. Additionally, Mr. Tweel is admitted before the United States Tax Court and has represented many individuals, businesses and estates in regard to Internal Revenue Service audits, assessments, collections and appeals.
Mr. Tweel has presented on numerous occasions to other professionals on issues ranging from reportable transactions and standards of tax practice to partnership tax issues to charitable giving to international tax issues. He has presented to the West Virginia Society of CPAs and the West Virginia Tax Institute on a wide variety of issues including the standards of federal tax practice and has presented for the Congress of American States in Europe concerning foreign business operations in the United States. Additionally, Mr. Tweel is an adjunct lecturer at the West Virginia University College of Law teaching a course on partnership taxation and state and local taxation.
Mr. Tweel is a longtime member of the Board of the West Virginia Tax Institute. He currently serves as Secretary and is a past President. Mr. Tweel served on the Board of Directors of the American Lung Association and is a past President of the American Lung Association of the Mid‑Atlantic. He is also a past President and Board member the Central West Virginia Chapter of the American Red Cross.
Mr. Tweel graduated from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, where he received his Bachelor of Arts in mathematics and English in 1990. He received his Juris Doctor from West Virginia University College of Law in 1993. He joined the Firm upon receiving his LL.M. in taxation from New York University School of Law in 1994 and became a member of Jackson Kelly in 2000.
