James K. Brown, a retired Member of the Firm, now enjoys an Of Counsel relationship.

During the 45 years of his active practice, Mr. Brown focused on alternative dispute resolution, banking, business and commercial, contracts, corporate finance, leases, litigation, municipal bonds, securities and natural resources law. He is widely acknowledged as one of the most preeminent municipal bond lawyers in the state and for over twenty-five years of his practice argued many of the most important bond issue cases in the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals. Mr. Brown served as chairman of the Firm's Executive Committee and for the last seven years of his practice served as General Counsel to the Firm in which capacity he advised the Firm on a wide variety of matters, including ethics, conflicts of interest and malpractice insurance issues. He has been listed in Woodward/White's The Best Lawyers in America® for business litigation since 1989.

Mr. Brown, a native of Greenbrier County was born and raised in West Virginia and attended West Virginia University (WVU), where he obtained his Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Laws degrees. Following his graduation from the West Virginia University College of Law, he joined the Firm in the Charleston office. While at WVU, Mr. Brown became a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Order of the Coif.

Over the years, Mr. Brown was a leader of the West Virginia State Bar, serving on its committees on legal ethics and continuing legal education and as president and thereafter chairman of the board of governors. He also served as president of the Junior Bar Section and as president of the Kanawha County Bar. Mr. Brown is a fellow of the American and West Virginia Bar Foundations and is admitted to practice in the state and federal courts of West Virginia, the U. S. Court of Appeals for both the Fourth and Sixth Circuits and the Supreme Court of the United States. He is listed in Who's Who in America. His community involvement includes service as a member of the board of directors of the Clay Foundation.
