Te'Anana Wilson Says Her Experience At Jackson Kelly Has Been Amazing

June 23, 2022

((Te'Anana is a Summer Associate at Jackson Kelly and not a practicing attorney))

My name is Te’Anana Wilson, and I am a South Carolina native. I graduated from the University of South Carolina with a BA in Sociology and a minor in Criminal Justice. I recently moved to Louisville, where I am in my second year at Brandeis School of Law. I have worked as a paralegal for the past eight (8) years before attending law school, and I was a little hesitant about starting so late in my life. The great thing is this was not a huge career change for me, and my experience reaffirmed my decision of being an attorney.

Life as a Law Student/Mom

I am a mom of a two (2) year-old little boy, and he has taught me the importance of living in the moment.  I often hear parents tend to do better in law school when they have a family. When it comes to handling stress, we tend to do better because there are so many different components in our lives outside of school. My schedule consisted of school in the morning, working in the afternoon, and a mom in between. Being a parent has taught me how to be determined and handle the stress which has equipped me with the tools to handle law school. By contrast, the workload can be laborious when managing my time between schoolwork and spending quality time with my son. So how do I do it? My son motivates me to be an example that there is no limit to what you can achieve.

Life As a Summer Associate

Jackson Kelly has been an amazing experience thus far. I was hesitant about returning to the office after working remotely, but it truly has been an exceptional opportunity to explore different areas of law. As a paralegal, I obtained skills that have certainly prepared me, but I truly feel like everything I am doing now is a whole new experience. There was an initial shock of being immersed with new challenging projects and assignments. Now, I am more at ease with the feedback from the attorneys. I have been able to attend mediation, draft motions, complete a will, and of course, lots of research. I hope as a Summer Associate I will continue to enhance my legal research and legal writing skills while acquiring time management and meeting the demanding deadlines.
