Jackson Kelly mourns the passing of The Honorable John T. Copenhaver, Jr., whose commitment to the rule of law during his fifty-year career as a U.S. District Judge for the Southern District of West Virginia left a lasting impact on West Virginia and jurisprudence beyond its borders.
The legal community deeply respected Judge Copenhaver’s intellect, his fairness, and his civility from the bench. His legacy continues through the clerks he mentored, the lawyers who became better by simply appearing in front of him, and the communities he influenced throughout his distinguished career.
“Judge Copenhaver’s reputation and legal contributions are unmatched in the history of West Virginia. He was always civil and courteous, and it was a privilege to appear before him.” – Seth Hayes, Chair, Jackson Kelly Litigation
“I am saddened by the passing of Judge Copenhaver. In addition to his long career and deep knowledge of the law, I will always remember his civility and genuine kindness to the lawyers and parties who appeared before him.” – Gretchen Callas, Member, Jackson Kelly.
We extend our condolences to his family and to all who had the privilege of knowing him.
