When you’re deeply ingrained in the community, community service doesn’t feel like an obligation; it’s simply neighbors helping neighbors. Jackson Kelly has a long-standing practice of supporting the communities in which our employees live and work. The Firm supports and encourages our employees to participate in causes they are passionate about, whether through volunteering, serving on a board or committee, or sponsoring an event.

Pro Bono Initiatives

Legal services are expensive – sometimes prohibitively so. Because these costs are often a daunting barrier to many individuals and organizations in need of legal help, the Firm is committed to providing legal services free of charge to those in the communities where our professionals live and work. At Jackson Kelly, we understand that we have the special ability to give back to our communities through legal service. Jackson Kelly attorneys across all offices have provided hundreds of hours of pro bono service to many individuals and organizations. In West Virginia, Jackson Kelly attorneys often participate in Tuesday Legal Connect, a program operated by the West Virginia State Bar out of the offices of West Virginia Legal Aid. Once a week, attorneys volunteer to take calls from the public, during which they offer suggestions, guidance, and assist callers in assessing their legal questions. Attorneys at Jackson Kelly are encouraged to participate in pro bono matters of all types, and the Firm encourages attorneys to take on pro bono cases about which they are passionate.

We have a Diversity Committee that is dedicated to recruiting, retaining and promoting all attorneys, regardless of race, color, religion, sexual orientation, gender, national origin, age, disability, marital status, or political affiliation.

We have a robust mentoring program that is dedicated to ensuring all new lawyers receive formal mentoring from senior associates and members of the firm for at least three years. We recognize that development and advancement in the legal profession is influenced by the support lawyers receive from mentors, and we want to ensure that all our lawyers receive the guidance and support necessary to succeed at Jackson Kelly.

We are an engaged member of the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity, which is an organization of more than 400 corporate legal departments and law firms working to create an environment where all talent has the opportunity to thrive.

We support organizations in the legal profession and in our communities that encourage diversity and inclusion and assist community members with accessing financial assistance, legal assistance, healthcare, education, and employment, among other necessities.
